The Qingdao Pingdu Olympic Center, one of the competition venues for the 34th Provincial Games in Shandong Province, stands as a testament to the power of innovative design. By integrating the swimming pool and basketball gym, the layout was transformed from "one venue-two pavilions" to "one venue-one pavilion". This not only avoided the imbalance of architectural size but also effectively saved land resources.
The design of the center is rooted in the theory of spatial efficiency, which suggests that cities and buildings are the results of the "comprehensive utilization and transformation of social resources". This theory was purposefully integrated into the design practice, making the center one of the first experimental construction results of this approach.
One of the unique features of the center is the relative separation of large and small spaces. This separation created technical convenience for the construction and reduced the required structural span for the core functional space, effectively reducing the construction technology difficulties and structural cost of large-span space. The center is constructed with a multi-layer frame system, which is simple and convenient to construct.
The center offers a variety of use possibilities. The basketball hall can provide plenty of spatial layout modes to meet the requirements of assembly activities with different sizes and types. The combination possibilities of core functional space and auxiliary space can be divided and combined, taking into account the different needs of event and daily use. Through the combination of the core functional space, a variety of experiences of watching games are created, enhancing the richness of space perception.
The Qingdao Pingdu Olympic Center is not just a sports venue, but a symbol of innovative design and efficient use of resources. It is a testament to the power of innovative design and the potential of spatial efficiency theory. The center was awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, a testament to its innovative design and efficient use of resources.
As we move forward, the Qingdao Pingdu Olympic Center serves as a beacon of what is possible when innovative design and efficient use of resources are combined. It is a testament to the power of innovative design and the potential of spatial efficiency theory.
